We congratulate all of our students on a job well done!

New Literacy Tutors Complete Training
Eighteen new literacy tutors were trained at the Dare Literacy Council Tutor Training Workshop on Saturday, January 21. Tutors learned about teaching adults to read, how to improve their reading and math skills, to learn English as a Second Language and to prepare for their GED. Tutors will work with students in Dare County and the Poplar Branch Township area of Currituck County. Grace Lutheran Church in Nags Head
provided space for the workshop. The workshop training team included Lynn Blackburn, Nancy Dunlap, Sherry Robinson-Sharpe and Jovita Drake. Volunteers Barbara Donaldson and Jay Dunlap helped facilitate the
workshop. Tutors attending the workshop included, front row, left to right: Pat Pulver, Mica White, Melanie Tolson, Amanda Montabon, Louise Casey, Susan Firman, Sylvia Jacocks and John McKeown. Back row, left
to right: Kathy Mitchell, JoAnn Adams, Andrea Facci (with Nell Long behind her), John Waldmann, John Fricker, Patty Fabrikant (with Susan Wheeler behind her), Kathy Whittenton and Sandra Schawang. For those
interested in volunteering as a tutor, another workshop will be held later this year.
A little bit about what we do…
The Dare Literacy Council (DLC) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. We train tutors every year to help adults and preschoolers. (We currently do not tutor school-age children.) You will find our tutors helping with reading, writing and speaking skills as well as teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to those whose native language is not English. Many students have improved their math skills with the help of our tutors, and countless others have received their GED. We are a member of ProLiteracy.
All of our services are free of charge to students in Dare County and the Poplar Township area of Currituck County.
How you can help
The DLC utilizes volunteers in many ways. Our Volunteer Coordinator interviews all potential volunteers to determine what their interests are and how much time they are able to give. Then each volunteer is matched with the appropriate task. Here are some ways you can volunteer:
- assist with fundraising events
- perform administrative duties (phone calls, data entry, letter writing)
- help with publicity (newsletter, website, write articles)
- assist with workshops and seminars
- serve as a Spanish interpreter or translator
- support existing tutors (for those with an education background)
How we are funded
The DLC receives funds from:
The DLC is able to continue its work in the community through the generosity of our local citizens. Monetary donations can be sent to the Dare Literacy Council, P.O. Box 7624, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.
